It’s been a while since I’ve updated anyone! This past weekend Chris and I were apart for THREE WHOLE DAYS!! It was terrible…well, actually it wasn’t so bad. I dropped Chris off at the airport on Friday afternoon and tried not to think about his United flight falling to the ground over the great plains in a blazing ball of fire. Then I went home and packed up for my camping trip! I met up with Mel and Chandra and we drove to Colter Bay to car camp for the night. It was really perfect. We had a great time hanging out and eating quesadillas. That night I was so snug in my sleeping bag (I think I finally got everything I need to be warm while camping…a 15 degree Mountain hardware bag, a REI fleece liner, Patagonia baselayers…yeah, so I’m a name dropper. Big deal). Then Saturday morning we packed up and made the hike through Cascade Canyon to our campsite near Lake Solitude. It was spectacular back there. The canyon is so beautiful and the views of the Tetons from there are incredible. We saw SEVEN moose on our trip! Six of them were bulls with massive racks. A couple times it was kind of sketchy because they were right by the trail and we had to get pretty close. Believe it or not, Moose are incredibly dangerous animals. They look like gentle giants, but in all reality they are just waiting to hoof people in the face. I slept cozy again that night and the next morning we woke up and hiked to Lake Solitude where we held our “church” service.
Eric did a devotional on Psalm 148 and we sang some worship songs. Psalm 148 proclaims how all the earth praises God. It’s incredible to think that a tree, just because it is a tree and it exists and it is created by God, is always praising God whether it wants to or not. Land animals and sea animals and wind and stars are all praising God because they proclaim how magnificent our Creator is. Humans are the only thing in creation that can choose not to worship God. It was pretty incredible to ponder that truth while looking up at the Tetons as if they were preforming on stage and we were simply sitting in the audience…free tickets and all!
On the hike back home the awful truth hit me: Too many dried apricots. I wanted to die and I thought I might. My stomach was in serious turmoil, but eventually it all died down and I was okay. But then on the way home I got in this dramatic mindset and I imagined that I would get to the car and get a message that Chris’ plane crashed and he never made it to the wedding in Austin. I would cry and cry and probably move home for a little while. I got so worked up I started to tear a little…but then reality sunk in and I realized I was a weirdo.
When I got home from camping I just crashed. I ate a little frozen pizza, put on a movie and fell fast asleep. The next morning I headed over to the post office and what to my surprise, a package…for me! Debbie sent me a wonderfully girly package with slippers and earings and candles and salt and pepper shakers and some great Christmas ornaments. I loved it all!! Then when I picked up Chris from the airport, he had two bags full of ornaments! They are all so thoughtful and pretty. I told Chris I want to decorate for Christmas now. He said no. I’m not allowed to do anything Christmas-y (including listening to my favorite Christmas CD) until after Thanksgiving. So, I’ll have to wait to set up my new nativity set and my snowman.
Speaking of Chris coming home, It was a warm homecoming! I was so happy to see him. We went to lunch at Sidewinders and then went home and looked through all our Christmas stuff. He was so encouraged by his weekend with his family and freinds. It was great to hear how everyone was doing and to hear how Billy and Terry exhorted Chris in how to do ministry. He was seriously encouraged by the whole thing.
And speaking of Sidewinders, that’s my new job! It’s a pretty popular sports bar/restaurant here in Jackson. I know, I know…a bar. But it’s more like a Chili’s or something. I started serving tables there last week and I have two more days of training then I can start picking up my own shifts. I’m hoping that it’s pretty good money…we’ll see.
All is well at the Buczinski home and I’ll update you more after this week!
